Six Driverless Buses Set for Mid-2026 Public Routes

Singapore's Land Transport Authority confirmed the deployment of six 16-seat autonomous buses on Service 400 (Marina Bay) and Service 191 (one-north), manufactured by MKX Technologies, Zhidao Network Technology, and BYD under an $8.14 million contract awarded in October 2025.

CETRAN: How Singapore Certifies Autonomous Vehicles

Located in Jurong Innovation District, the 1.8-hectare CETRAN test centre replicates Singapore's road conditions with signal junctions, rain simulators, and flood zones. All autonomous vehicles must pass rigorous assessments before deployment on public roads.

Why Singapore Became a Global AV Testing Ground

Singapore's compact geography, well-maintained roads, and government-led Smart Nation strategy created a natural fit for autonomous vehicle testing. The one-north district has served as the designated AV test bed since 2015, with subsequent expansions covering the National University of Singapore campus, Singapore Science Park, Dover, and Buona Vista.

The Road Traffic Act was amended to empower LTA to set and adapt rules for autonomous vehicles. Combined with CETRAN's standardised testing protocols, Technical Reference TR 68 (published 2019, updated 2021), and mandatory insurance and data-recording requirements, Singapore established one of the most structured regulatory environments for AV deployment in Southeast Asia.

Key Milestones in Singapore's AV Development

2015

One-North Designated as First AV Test Bed

The Ministry of Transport officially approved one-north as Singapore's inaugural autonomous vehicle testing zone, enabling controlled trials on public roads within the business park district.

2016–2017

CETRAN Established at NTU-JTC Jurong Innovation District

Nanyang Technological University, LTA, and JTC Corporation jointly launched the Centre of Excellence for Testing and Research of Autonomous Vehicles. The 1.8-hectare test circuit opened with replicated Singapore road features, including rain simulators and gradient courses.

2017

AV Testing Zones Expanded Beyond One-North

Testing areas grew to include NUS, Singapore Science Park, Dover, and Buona Vista, giving developers a broader range of real-world road scenarios for evaluation.

2018

Mandatory CETRAN Safety Assessment Introduced

LTA and Traffic Police jointly mandated that all autonomous vehicles pass CETRAN assessments covering basic manoeuvres and obstacle detection before entering any trial area.

2019

Technical Reference TR 68 Published

Singapore released its Technical Reference for AVs, covering safety, testing, and deployment standards. This document, updated in 2021, serves as the national benchmark for AV readiness.

January 2025

LTA Issues Tender for Autonomous Bus Pilot

The Land Transport Authority opened a request for proposals for autonomous bus deployment on two public services, with a contract ceiling set at over $8 million.

October 2025

MKX-Zhidao-BYD Consortium Wins AV Bus Contract

LTA awarded an $8.14 million contract for six driverless buses to a consortium led by MKX Technologies, with Zhidao Network Technology (Beijing) and BYD (Singapore) providing vehicle manufacturing.

March 2026

First Driverless Public Bus Arrives in Singapore

The initial 16-seat autonomous bus arrived for Service 400 (Marina Bay) and Service 191 (one-north), with public testing scheduled from mid-2026. Cameras and sensors provide 360-degree environmental awareness.

April 2026

Punggol Autonomous Shuttles Open to Public

WeRide-Grab launched the Ai.R ride in Punggol on April 1, 2026, alongside ComfortDelGro-Pony.ai's route. Initial rides are free, with a flat $4 fare starting mid-2026. Over 30,000 km of autonomous mileage had been logged before opening.

Punggol: Singapore's Autonomous Mobility Neighbourhood

Punggol was chosen for the first public autonomous shuttle routes due to its relatively new infrastructure and planned residential density. Three fixed routes with 4-7 stops each connect housing blocks to commercial nodes like Oasis Terraces and Punggol Plaza, cutting public transport commute times by up to 15 minutes.

The workforce model is notable: Grab has retrained 14 driver-partners as certified Safety Operators and Remote Operators working from the Ai.R Operations Command Centre, demonstrating that autonomous vehicle deployment can create new job categories rather than only displacing existing roles.
